On August 28, Cover Georgia coalition members reconnected in-person to discuss Georgia’s coverage gap, the changing health coverage landscape, and what these challenges mean for Georgians trying to get the care they need.
We also explored what is next for the coalition and ways partners can get more involved in this work. From new ways to participate to the next steps we are taking together, the conversation was a good reminder of why this coalition matters and the possibilities ahead.
Meet the Coverage Captains Building Local Momentum
Closing Georgia’s coverage gap takes more than statewide advocacy. It takes trusted voices in local communities who can speak directly to the barriers uninsured Georgians face every day.
That’s where Coverage Captains come in. This grassroots leadership program trains community members across Georgia to lead local outreach, host educational events, and share their own experiences navigating the coverage gap. Coverage Captains serve as local representatives of the Cover Georgia coalition, building awareness and mobilizing their neighbors during key advocacy moments.
Captains receive training and ongoing support, and their work is a key part of how Cover Georgia builds momentum for Medicaid expansion across the state.
Health Care Is on the Ballot: What to Ask Candidates
As Georgia heads into the 2026 elections, the leaders chosen by voters this November will have real power over the future of Medicaid expansion and how Georgia closes the coverage gap. Georgians for a Healthy Future’s new blog, “How the 2026 Elections Could Shape Health Care in Georgia,” walks through which offices on the ballot hold real influence over Medicaid, Georgia Access, and the health care decisions that affect Georgians every day.
Georgians for a Healthy Future also put together a companion voter guide breaking down each office’s role in plain language so you know exactly what’s at stake.
We’re encouraging Cover Georgia supporters to use these resources as a starting point for conversations with candidates and elected officials this fall. Ask where they stand on closing Georgia’s coverage gap, whether they support expanding Medicaid, and how they would build on or change the Pathways to Coverage program to make coverage more accessible, not less. The more elected officials hear directly from constituents about MedEx, the more important they will know this issue is.
